dc.description.abstract | This thesis describes two new methods for creating resonators for superconducting qubits: photonic crystals and impedance gratings. Photonic crystals use periodic dielectric spacings to give rise to prohibited band modes in the structure. When defects are introduced, light can resonate at the location of the defects and reach high quality factors. Impedance gratings are also used for resonators, and this paper will show that they offer a tunable quality factor and the option for a high modal volume. These effects are useful for tailoring qubits for readout or long lifetimes, and for exploring certain regimes of quantum optics such as the multimodal Rabi Hamiltonian. This paper will describe the theory and simulations for each system, as well as experiments made with photonic crystals. | en_US |
