Abstract: | My heartfelt thanks to Professor Nick Nesbitt, my thesis advisor, for orienting me in my research. This thesis would not have been possible without funding provided by the Department of French and Italian at Princeton University, which enabled me to conduct archival research at the archives of the Prefecture of Police in Le Pré Saint-Gervais, France and at the archives of the Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine in Nanterre, France. In addition, I owe my gratitude to my grandmother, who eagerly proofread my drafts, to Marion Clerc, who provided input, and to my family and friends, whose words and text messages of encouragement sustained me through many long nights. |
