Home and Native Lands: Infrastructures of Integration in Toronto and Stockholm

Abstract

In 2015, during the height of the migration crisis, Sweden was lauded as a haven for migrants after the country took in early 160,000 refugees and asylum seekers. But in the years following, questions have surfaced regarding whether the Swedish government provides adequate resources and support for integration. Some scholars and journalists turn to Canada as a potential leader on integration policy. This thesis explores grassroots integration efforts from communities in Toronto and Stockholm: social integration programs around cooking in Toronto, and digital platforms connecting newcomers and locals in Stockholm. These infrastructures of integration provide services that facilitate the refugee and newcomer experience. Considering the political and social climates of both cities, each chapter analyzes the implications of these infrastructures. In examining the experiences of refugees, NGO founders, and journalists, this project challenges notions of integration and whether models exist for achieving such a goal.
