Abstract: Social media is strange. Applying Aristotelian friendship theory and Gricean norms of communication to social media, I demonstrate ways in which the norms of social media are quite different from the norms we experience offline. While we may be tempted to view our online interactions as analogous to our offline interactions, I argue that we should be hesitant to classify them as such.
