Homelessness Prevention with the Crisis Ministry of Mercer County: A Data Analysis Approach

Abstract

Homelessness is a prevailing issue in the United States, affecting individuals and families economically, socially, and psychologically. For over a decade, the Crisis Ministry of Mercer County has helped to combat this issue through assistance grants. Partnering with the Community-Based Learning Initiative (CBLI) office, this thesis will analyze data using statistical tools such as exponential smoothing, moving average models, and other predictive models to assist the Crisis Ministry in their Homelessness Prevention Program. By analyzing the program’s client base from the past ten years, the goal is to better understand the target population’s characteristics, their needs, and how the Crisis Ministry has structured their decision-making. Ultimately, this project will provide insights into the composition of the Crisis Ministry’s target population. Furthermore, this thesis will shine a light on new questions regarding the program’s grant allocation process, and instigate a discussion around the progression of homelessness in the Trenton area.
