In this work, I survey and interrogate the relationship between nationalism, the proverbial refugee, and its global image through the portal of the Refugee Olympic Team (ROT) at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In doing so, I uncover how the team challenges, contradicts, affirms, and illuminates multi-layered social realities of “refugee-ness” within the globalizing world. Additionally, I bring to light how the ROT calls to question the fixity of the nation-state and stresses the arbitrary manner in which "cultures" and "nations" are conceptualized.en_US
